On Monday afternoon at 14:34 hrs after drenching storms moved through the fire district, the Union Fire Company No.1 and mutual aid units from Quarryville and Rising Sun were alerted to the 200 block of Lower Hopewell Road in Lower Oxford Township for a reported building fire.
Assistant 21 marked on-scene to find fire showing from a large mushroom house and assumed the "Lower Hopewell Command", with Fire Chief Prettyman as the operations officer. The working fire dispatch was also struck for additional resources.
Engine 21-1 (Kinsey) arrived, laid a 600' supply line up the private drive and deployed an attack line to the well involved roof area. Engine 21-2 (Greene)/Tanker 21 arrived and established the water supply sector (Terry's) on Lower Hopewell Road. The first alarm tanker task force was also transmitted to bring additional shuttle tankers to the incident scene.
Quarryville Truck 57 setup on the front of the fire building and made preparations to operate the aerial master steam, while Engine 57-4 established a draft site on Fairview Road to fill tankers moving water back to the incident scene.
For several hours crews on-scene operated the Truck 57 master stream and several hand lines to contain the fire in the extensively damaged building.
The fire was placed under control at 1628 hours with the final 21 units clearing the incident at 19:55 hours.
