Hazardous Materials Incident in Nottingham

At 2250 hours, the Union Fire Company No. 1 EMS was alerted for a reported Sick Person at a residence on Red Oak Drive in the Nottingham Manor section of West Nottingham Township. Within a few minutes, Medic 94 (SCCEMS) was added to the incident after new reports of the subject having trouble breathing.

Upon arrival, it was determined that there would be two Patients and unknown source making them ill. The incident was upgraded to a Hazardous Materials Incident, adding the Fire Company and the Chester County Hazardous Materials Team (15).

Assistant 21 (Meadowcroft) arrived and was briefed by the EMS crews. He established the "Red Oak Command" and requested two additional Ambulances to the scene. This alerted Wakefield EMS (88) and LEMSA (56) both from Lancaster County.

Engine 21-1 (Lt. Greene) backed onto Spruce Drive and lit the area with scene lighting. The crew then deployed the Booster Line and several tarps to establish a Decontamination Zone in the grass at the intersection of Spruce and Red Oak.

Rescue 21 (FF V. Brown) arrived and assisted with scene lighting and with the Decontamination Operations.

Seven Emergency Responders were sent through decontamination prior to be loaded into Ambulances and transported to the Lancaster General Hospital for further evaluation.

Command requested additional Ambulances to respond bring Avondale (23) and Longwood (25) to the scene.

The County HazMat units arrived and set up their operations with their crews donning their suits prior to checking the entire scene both in and around the residence in question. The crew escorted the resident through decontamination and into another Ambulance. That resident was also transported to the Lancaster General Hospital for further evaluation.

Upon completion of the HazMat Operations, Deputy 15 advised that no hazards were found and that the scene was deemed safe. Crews the began to clean up the scene prior to having a debriefing involving all agencies involved.

The final Fire and EMS units were clear of the scene at 0209 hours, turning the incident over to the Pennsylvania State Police to continue their investigation.

Engine 27-2 (Cochranville) transferred into Station 21 to cover the area during the incident and Ambulance 22-1 (West Grove) transferred to the Jennersville Regional Hospital to cover the majority of southern Chester County.
