Public Service Box 2103

At 0205 hours, Chief 21 (Meadowcroft) was notified by the Chester County Fireboard of a reported Animal Rescue in the 600 block of Barren Road in East Nottingham Township.

Chief 21 arrived and was directed by the Amish farm owner to the manure pit to rear of the main barn. Three cows were found to in the pit, submerged in 8 feet of manure.

After a quick scene size up, Chief 21 requested the fire company to be dispatched for manpower along with the Bart Township Fire Company (51) and Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company (Unionville - 36) were dispatched for their large animal rescue capabilities.

Rescue 21 (Safety Officer Booth) and Ladder 21 (Hoseman Thomas) responded. Upon arrival, the crews took scene lights, cords reels, ropes, and some hand tools to the manure pit. The fence was then removed for better access.

Chief 51 arrived and brought a large animal harness into the scene. The harness was looped around each cow's neck and then looped around the forks of the front loader operated by East Nottingham Township.

Each cow was then lifted out of the pit to safety. Once back on land, upon regaining their footing, each cow was lead back to the barn by the owner.

The crews then spent time cleaning up the VERY dirty equipment prior to leaving the scene. Rescue 21 was cleared to run an additional emergency in West Nottingham Township.

The final units were clear of the incident at 0510 hours.

Units: Ambulance 21-2, Chief 21, Deputy 21, Rescue 21, and Ladder 21
