Aston was diagnosed at infancy with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), this is a complex syndrome affecting appetite, growth, metabolism, cognitive function, and behavior. The hallmark characteristics of PWS typically begin around age three to five. It is estimated that PWS affects one in 12,000 to 15,000 births. This syndrome affects both males and females and all ethic groups. Currently there is no cure to date, no medications or procedures are successful in staving off the relentless hunger. However, growth hormone has been effective in increasing height, improving body mass and metabolism, and boosting strength and energy.

In, Feb 2014 Aston was diagnosed with a second syndrome Neurofibromatosis type 1, a tumor disorder of the nervous system. What is neurofibromatosis (NF)? The Neurofibromatosis (NF1 and NF2) are a set of genetic disorders, which can cause tumors (mostly benign) to grow along all types of nerves, as well as the brain. The tumors whether benign or malignant can affect the production of hormones. NF can also effect the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin.

In, late 2019 Aston was diagnosed with a third condition, Moyamoya is a rare condition in which the blood vessels (internal carotid arteries) that supply blood to the brain become narrowed. This limits the flow of blood to the brain, and puts them at risk for stroke. It is believed that Aston is the only person in the world to suffer from all three of these conditions.

Tomorrow, February 18th, Aston will head to Children Hospital of Philadephia (CHOP) to undergo surgery relative to the Moyamoya. The Union Fire Company No. 1 supported Aston tonight, before his trip to CHOP, with a visit to his home. Please keep Aston and family in your thoughts.
